femtocell basestations - gsm vs 802.11

wifi will prove to be a major threat to the gsm based telcos.

as a means of response, mobile network operators have developed a cell technology known as femtocell.

femotocell basestations work much in the same way as a wifi access point, but using the gsm network and designed for the corporate environment.

the mobile operators hope that this will reduce the loss of customers by improving cellular service "in-building" and giving the ability to adapt to a "fixed/wireless" convergence topology that does not involve wifi.
